Reasons NOT TO Apply Nails
Reasons NOT TO Apply Nails

Contra What?

A contra-indication is something that would prevent you from applying nail extensions. We have provided a list of contra-indications, please do no not ignore this section. You will be putting your clients nails at risk if you try to apply nails to such conditions.
Bacterial Infection - "Greenies"

Bacterial infection is normally yellow, green and in severe cases it can go brown/black. This discolouration normally starts with a little yellow spot that eventually becomes green. This staining is the bacteria's waste products. As the bacteria breeds there are more waste products, hence the colour changes from yellow to green. This discolration will stain the natural nail. The staining can be removed by lightly buffing the natural nail with a 240 grit Sand Turtle. But to be honest you need to make sure that you do not over file. Over filing will damage the nail.

It is not contagious, despite the fact that it can occur on one or several nails. It is actually caused by unsanitary working conditions. If you do not prep your nails before applying your nail tips and product overlay, you will be sealing and trapping in bacteria. You are creating an ideal home for the bacterium: moist, warm and a breeding ground. All tools & files need to be decontaminated (sterilised or disinfected or both).

Another contributing factor is lifted nail product. If your clients do not return fortnightly for maintenance, lifting of the product at the cuticle area may occur. In this case you may find that bacteria may find its way between the lifted product and the natural nail. NEVER JUST GLUE THE LIFTED AREA. You must remove the lifted product, cleanse and reapply fresh product.
Fungal Infection

There are several types of fungal infections and fungus is contagious. Fungi can attack the skin and the nails. It is hard to identify if you are a novice. Common characteristics are thickening of the nail plate, greyish/yellowish staining normally from the free edge upwards, lifting of the natural nail from its nail bed, and disappearance of the side walls (fungi slowly eating away at the nail folds).

If you think a client has a fungal infection you will need to refuse her custom (unfortunately). Advise her to pop along to her GP and get her nails analysed. This condition is hard to cure and will worsen with time. Treatments range from, tablets, creams and paint on solutions.

PLEASE NOTE
Don't panic if your client has ONLY one of the above conditions, it is the collection of ALL that could be signs of a fungal infection. Muliple lines can occur on the nail from age and after the birth of a child. Missing side walls can be the result of file abuse (rounding your nails and hacking into the sides) and the effects of bitten nails over the years.

Remember it is the collection of all symptoms that are screaming fungal infection.
Broken Skin

Please be aware that broken skin, redness, swollen skin and especially pus is a no no. If you apply chemical products to such areas with a port of entry the substance can enter the blood stream.
Allergies

It is rare for an immediate reaction to occur whilst using nail products. However, repeated misuse of products can lead to overexposure and a possible allergic reaction.

Over exposure…. What is that! Overexposure is allowing a product to absorb into the blood stream or entering via inhalation. Repeated overexposure can result in sensitising yourself to the product and resulting in an allergic reaction. To prevent such happenings always make sure that the products do not come into contact with your skin and always make sure that your room is well ventilated (open windows etc).

Allergies tend to be red, itchy and eventually blister. Allergies are not that common, but may occur in those that are sensitive to the products.
Thinned & Damaged Nails

Not a good base to apply nails to. Nails will not last that long if applied to thin or damaged nails. The base is weak and too flexible and in severe cases can lead to a nasty break.
Health & Medication

Certain health conditions can affect the bonding process as can medication. Make sure you always perform a client consulation and record any medical conditions and make a note of medication. Stress can also affect the bonding process too, as well as diet.
Diseases & Nail Disorders
We could write a book about this and bore you to tears with the different diseases and disorders. But we know that you are not going to intake all of the conditions. . Never over look a condition, all conditions need to be investigated. If you come across something you are unsure of , recommend that the client visits her GP,and advise your client to be persistent when she visits her GP.
Well we hope we have not frightened you off?

Sounds scary does'nt it. But we would like you to be aware of the contra-indications. Applying nails to any of the above contra-indications would result in putting your client at risk.
